Lactate Profile - Cycling Outdoor
Description
This assessment will start with a brief consultation at our laboratory in Dore. We’ll discuss current training and performance goals before taking a resting heart rate measure and fingerprick blood sample. There will be plenty of time to discuss the protocol and ask any questions about the assessment After that, we’ll have a short ride (~5 minutes) to our outdoor lab which has stunning views of the Peak District. We will then complete a familiarisation climb at low intensity making sure you are prepared for the assessment. Your lactate profile will start at a low, pre-determined intensity which will be identified using your current understanding of your profile (if known) or recent PBs. You will then complete a series of 4-5 minute intervals. At the end of each interval we will obtain measures of heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and blood lactate concentration (via fingerprick blood sample). Cycling intensity (power) will then be increased by ~15 – 20 W and the test will continue until we are confident that your LT2 intensity has been reached. As the test will be completed in our outdoor laboratory you will need your own bike. You do not need to have your own power meter to undertake this test, we can use our power meter pedals or heart rate monitor to control cycling intensity. However, we are just as happy to use data from your power meter to run the test. This will allow data from our assessment to transfer seamlessly into your training (see FAQ 3 for more details). Report We will use the information collected during your assessment (heart rate, RPE and blood lactate) to produce a detailed physiological report. The report will be sent to you within 2 days of your test and will include: • A clear definition of your training zones. This can be based on a model you are familiar with. We take a holistic approach to training zone identification using power, HR and RPE. • Guidance on 'race' or 'completion time' for any upcoming event or guidance on power / HR to help you achieve a PB on your favourite Strava segment. • Suggestions and examples of training sessions which will help address limitations within your lactate profile and help you achieve your goals. Who is it for? This lactate profile assessment is aimed at cyclists who prefer the great outdoors. A good understanding of ‘pacing’ is helpful so if this is your fist assessment of this nature then we recommend undertaking our indoor lactate assessment.
